Fireweed Institute: About Us

The Fireweed Institute is a national Indigenous-led Centre of Excellence dedicated to advancing economic sovereignty and self-determination for Indigenous entrepreneurs, innovators, and investment professionals. We design and deliver culturally grounded programs that bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern business, ensuring Indigenous leaders have the tools, networks, and capital to thrive. Rooted in the values of reciprocity, innovation, and community wealth-building, we are reshaping the economic landscape by fostering Indigenous-led solutions that honor our past, empower the present, and shape a sustainable future.

Fireweed is one of the first plants to emerge after a wildfire, bringing renewal and possibility to the landscape.

Growing tall and resilient—sometimes up to nine feet—it bends and adapts to shifting conditions, embodying the strength required to thrive in times of change. Its vibrant petals are a reminder that beauty and hope can flourish even in the wake of disruption, playing a vital role in restoring balance to the ecosystem. Fireweed does not grow alone; it thrives in connection, spreading through underground rhizomes that sustain and strengthen the whole. It offers nourishment, medicine, and healing, enriching the land it regenerates. In fireweed, we see the power of collective resilience, adaptation, and the wisdom that transformation is not only possible—it is essential.

Through Fireweed, we’re cultivating a future where Indigenous entrepreneurs are the architects of thriving economies—on our terms.

All our work is designed to drive Indigenous economic liberation and sovereignty while maintaining entrepreneurs’ well-being and success at the forefront.

Our Story

Born from the urgent need for Indigenous-led economic transformation, the Fireweed Institute emerged as a pathway to change. We support Indigenous families, matriarchs, elders, and youth by ensuring Indigenous entrepreneurs have the resources they need to build generational wealth and drive impact in their communities. We also work to educate funders, policymakers, and allies on the path to economic liberation.

Lodgepoles:
Our Core Areas of Focus

In traditional Indigenous architecture, lodgepoles provide strength, integrity, and balance, allowing a structure to stand resilient against external forces. At Fireweed Institute, our lodgepoles serve the same role, anchoring our mission and ensuring sustainable, long-term impact:

Learning & Training

Our educational approach includes accelerator programs for growth-stage companies, investor apprenticeships, and innovation workshops. These initiatives are designed to help Indigenous entrepreneurs reach investment- and export-readiness, launch new businesses, and secure the funding they need to grow. By offering a blend of technical skills, access to community and mentorship, and traditional knowledge, we create an environment where Indigenous entrepreneurs can thrive and expand their ventures, contributing to the broader ecosystem of innovation.

Fireweed places a strong emphasis on research that reflects the realities of Indigenous entrepreneurship. Our “Red Papers” and other open-source resources provide deep insights into the challenges, successes, and lessons learned through our work. This includes policy development, framework creation, and knowledge sharing.

Indigenous entrepreneurship is rooted in cultural stories and traditions. Fireweed is committed to amplifying these stories, providing platforms for Indigenous entrepreneurs to share their journeys and successes. By showcasing these stories, we aim to enhance personal and communal brand recognition, thereby fostering a sense of pride and encouraging others in the community to pursue their own entrepreneurial paths.
In time, we will provide consulting and advisory services to key ecosystem partners. Our backgrounds in corporate training and facilitation can be deployed to help governments, corporations, non-profits, and educational institutions engage meaningfully and relationally with Indigenous communities. Our goal is to create safe, mutually beneficial partnerships that acknowledge and respect Indigenous cultural practices.
A key long-term component of our vision is the creation of a Community Wealth Fund that invests in Indigenous businesses. This fund will serve as an antidote to lateral violence by offering shared equity opportunities in ventures, fostering collaboration, and building a collective sense of ownership within the entrepreneurial community. This fund is crucial for ensuring that the benefits of entrepreneurship remain within Indigenous communities, amplifying the success of local ventures.

The Centre for Excellence for Indigenous Entrepreneurship & Innovation will be the first facility of its kind. It will include convening spaces, prototype and design labs, and food and medicinal gardens. Reflecting our inherent bond with the land, it will integrate our cultural values to sustain and enhance the well-being, prosperity, and innovation of Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Commitment to Indigenous Sovereignty

Our work is grounded in Indigenous self-determination and a deep responsibility to our communities, lands, and future generations. We honour the work that went into frameworks like the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Reports, and we actively uphold their principles alongside the knowledge, governance, and economic systems that Indigenous peoples and their unique communities have carried since time immemorial.

For us, economic reconciliation is not just about participating in existing systems—it is about reclaiming control over our economies, businesses, and futures. This includes revitalizing traditional trade routes and commerce practices, as well as restoring the networks of exchange that have sustained our nations for generations. It means building Indigenous-led business ecosystems where wealth stays in our communities, where data sovereignty is protected, and where Indigenous entrepreneurs shape their own narratives, strategies, and pathways forward.

Data Sovereignty & Indigenous-Led Business Intelligence

Fireweed Institute upholds the inherent right of Indigenous communities, individuals, and businesses to govern their own data—ensuring that insights, analytics, and research remain in our hands and serve our interests. We are committed to ongoing learning and action in this emergent and evolving space, guided by Indigenous data sovereignty principles that center self-determination, consent, and community benefit. Our approach prioritizes Indigenous-led governance, control, and stewardship of data, developing frameworks that reflect our values, protect our knowledge systems, and resist external extraction.
